News April 2017

Malika Sellami:

Multilingual Musician & Educational Artist

Malika Sellami is a folk and world music multilingual singer songwriter and educational workshop performer. Malika traveled to 27 countries and got lots of her inspiration from the connections she made and the experiences she had. Now more sedentary and focused on performing, coordinating projects that are close to her heart, being a mother to an 18 months old and an outdoor preschool French immersion teacher, She learns to embrace ephemeral moments and share them with the world, through songs and stories with lively heartfelt lyrics and catchy loving melodies, some sing alongs, some kids songs some mantras...

On the way from Quebec city, where she grew up and taught as a Drama teacher, to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where she found a community where she grew into a professional artist. From a Tunisian father and a French Canadian mother, she has brought her culture and background and made her own unique path, integrating her passions for music, education and spirituality.

She won Le Gala Fransaskois de la Chanson, a contest organized by the Saskatchewan francophone association, in 2009 and Nouvelle Scène in 2014, for best composition and performance, she was a finalist to Chant' Ouest, the western Canadian francophone performing contest in Edmonton, Alberta both times. In July 2009, Malika released her first EP: Manifest some Love and toured Canada with established Saskatoon singer/songwriter and Jazz singer, Gillian Snider. In 2012, Malika released her first full length world-folk album Barefoot Smiling. In 2015 she gave birth to both a boy and an eponym album with Samanvaya Kirtan, her Kirtan project she partners with Padmashri Anastasia Gheyssen. Samanvaya Kirtan was in nomination for Spiritual Artist of the year at the Western Canadian Music Awards in 2016.

Music

In July 2011 she engaged local Saskatoon musicians in a playful recording project, an inspired CD where she puts her experiences traveling into 9 songs recorded over four days at Ancient Spirals Retreat, overlooking the South Saskatchewan river. The landscape and intimate settings provided a wellspring of inspiration and collaboration.

In 2012, Malika released Barefoot, Smiling, her second album. With songs like "Prairie Love" which captures the wonders and beauty of the prairie skies, "Free Spirits Apart" or "Little Daisy" which share love stories, Barefoot Smiling  is a collection of postcards put into songs. Barefoot, Smiling is about the road and the people you meet while traveling, homesickness and finding new homes, discovery and loss. Barefoot, Smiling finds Malika expressing herself not only in her second language English, but also her native French and newfound Spanish.

2015 was a year of realizations for Malika. She has partnered and has shared the stage with Anastasia Gheyssen performing mantras (prayers) in a devotional and meditative musical Kirtan. They released their album under the project name Samanvaya Kirtan in December 2015 and toured Saskatchewan and Quebec City. They are still playing and creating melodies for ancient chants in Saskatoon and around Saskatchewan.
